It has been fifteen years since we (Western Basin-Toledo) covered the Toledo Mud Hens. It was fifteen years ago when Joe Napoli partnered with Fifth Third Bank to move the Mud Hens from south Toledo to downtown. The new stadium is the state of the art in baseball stadiums in the International League. This first class organization has won three Western Division Championships, 2 International League World Series. It was in 2015; Joe Napoli and his group of financial wizards introduced Hensville and the beautiful Fleetwoods Restaurant and Entertainment Center. Downtown Toledo will soon have at least four venues of success in the old Warehouse District.

Another sign of real success is the contributions the minor league club (Mud Hens) has made to the parent club (Detroit Tigers). The Detroit Tigers have many great players the Mud Hens have helped develop in the last fifteen years.

Joe Napoli and his Mud Hens’ organization have done a fantastic job in the last fifteen years to help the overall image of Toledo. With one of the top two cities in per-game attendance in the International league, the Mud Hens are looking to break their attendance rate every year since 2000. The Huntington Center and a proposed cultural center are all part of this new look for downtown Toledo.

I was fortunate to attend opening day many times in the last fifteen years. This year was something special, with the opening of Fleetwoods.

Many things make up the incredible positive force the Mud Hens give to Toledo. The corporate suites that are close to capacity each home game, the location within walking distance from the Erie Market, Promenade Park, and downtown shopping, are just a few. The BCSN cable channel gives the fans a chance to see the Mud Hens when they are out of town or on video taped replays.

Be sure you plan a trip down to see the Mud Hens next season, if you do not make it to one of the International World Series games. Call the Mud Hens at (419) 725-4371 for more information or visit the Swamp shop for all the Mud Hens souvenirs.
